Why is achieving natural risk levels so important?

Natural risk levels are consistent with a remarkably long streak of evolutionary survival of life on earth, spanning thousands of years. By not adding to them, we could conceivably help guarantee thousands more. Decisions to incur high-stakes risks based on simplistic "cost-benefit" comparisons trade long-term survival for short-term comforts. Instead, we need to treat absolute threats with the ultimate in caution.
